The Mongolian Bankhar Project

The Mongolian Bankhar Project is a non-profit NGO who's goal is to reinstitute the bankhar dog as a livestock protection dog for the nomadic people of Mongolia, as a means to help protect the natural predators like wolves and snow lepeords. The bankhar, an ancient landrace breed was traditionally a livestock protection dog but it's use as one was lost after several decades of influence in Mongolia from both China and Russia.

The presence of a dog among livestock can effectively deter predators from attacking livestock and as a result, eliminate retaliatory killings by herders on predators.

The MBDP is working with Mongolian park services and conservation organizations to place puppies with herders in areas with high pressure from predators. We regularly check up on our host families to collect predation data and survey our dogs. For more information, follow the links below to learn more or get in touch with the organization.
